White Mountain Road kinda open

by Greg Enright » Mon May 14, 2012 5:41 am

White Mountain road is clear and open to the Patriarch Grove turnoff and open to four wheel drive vehicles beyond that. Snow is melting fast, and the mud is drying up, so the road should be open to all vehicles soon.

Here is a view from our mountain bike ride today up there.

I was up there Tuesday 5/22 and was able to get to the gate in a 2wd Tundra. We were right behind a mini cooper that also made it just fine. The 4wd sign was still up however.

I was there last week-end (the week-end of June 2nd) and the road was 100% clear of snow. Made it up with a 2WD Ford Escape, which still took a while (I don't know how people do it with mini coopers, convertibles, etc...). Saw very few people (on the road and on the trail to White Mountain) but, of note, both a minivan and a two-sitter Mercedes convertible made it up the road.

How was the wind while you were there? We experienced 75+ mph winds after the observatory and I was wondering if that was typical or just crappy luck.

From what I have read online, high winds happen very frequently on White Mountain. Having said that, we had a pleasant outing with sustained winds in the 15mph range and gusts in the 25mph range. We found that the winds were increasing steadily throughout the day (I think that is typical as well) and were happy that we started hiking around 7am, which allowed us to get back as the winds were starting to become more and more annoying. Nothing even close to 75mph, though...
