Michael HoytA Visit to the Horsehead Arch  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 26, 2010

Michael Hoyt

26jul10 - Ascended the East Ridge Route with my friend, Jim. We added in a side trip to visit the Horsehead Arch during the ascent. After hitting the summit, we descended by the South Face Route.

There is now a lot of deadfall (from the wildfires of 2000) along the East Ridge Route. AND, the undergrowth is getting to be more than a person can stand. I suggest that all ascents of this ridge use the South Face Route OR if on the East Face Route, take place early enough in the year to be on DEEP snow.

May 30, 2009 - Found a different route to the summit using the east ridge. This route includes a short section of Class 3 climbing.

June 21, 2008 - So, I'm descending the south face using new crampons and have almost reached the lower edge of the steep, well-consolidated snow. I step downhill with my left foot and sink to my knee. Off balance, I firmly plant a tooth of my right crampon into my left calf - a nice clean and deep puncture. Fortunately there were still 4 miles back to the trailhead which provided enough time (and movement) for the wound to drain well plus keep my partially-cut calf muscle from cramping up.

A very nice early-season hike with no long-lasting ill effects.
