Great Photo

of a seldom seen aspect of this potentially dangerous mountain. The west face route, which I have climbed, is just to the left of the picture. Note the long, fluted gullies running down the length of the mountain. The unfortunate death that recently occured on this peak was supposedly due to a fall down one of these chutes. If anyone knows more, please post and correct me if I got the details wrong. Thanks for posting this picture of the mountain's rarely seen west face!

Aaron:

I was wondering exactly where that guy fell while climbing. I forgot to look for his name in the register as I think I heard he summitted. The west face is the worst decent route I have done on any mountain to date, although I haven't done the Bells yet. It took me 2.5 hrs to get down that loose mess!

Re: Great Photo

We climbed the West Face route. I posted long ago it on SP on the Snowmass page. It was certainly a long day. Distance wise, it's a MILE of climbing from the drainage below (almost 3 hours). A real challenge. Staying on the rib to the south of a gully made for more solid ground. The gully was a mess. Even so, even big rocks teetered on that slope. Snowmass is more like Snowmess, but if you accept that going in, it's a fun mountain. Would I do it again? No. It's not THAT great, and there are so many more to climb. But if you want quick and dirty and getting it out of the way, the West Face or S-Ridge is the way to go.

I believe you're right about the climber. He had made the summit and fell during his descent.
