Rare White Huckleberry

Rare White Huckleberry

This photo shows a white huckleberry from a small patch of them near Bovil Idaho. I had heard about these for years, but never saw one despite years of running around the woods. Finally an old lady picker called to enquire about some she found since the people at the University kept erroneously telling her there was no such thing. We arranged a site visit with some Forest Research Lab folks and documented the site. But don't eat white berries unless you really know what you are doing. White berries generally are poisenous. Yes, they exist!

My family has been picking huckleberries near Deary, Idaho for years, and we know a very nice patch of these white berries -- perhaps the same one refered to here. They're slightly more tart than standard huckleberries, but there's no question that they're really huckleberries.

Re: Yes, they exist!

These in the photo are just up the road a little bit from Moose Ck Reservoir. Your description of the taste is exactly how I remember it.

W Huckleberries, Exceptionally RARE 2016

I recently stumbled across 3 stems, while picking my planned 40 lbs. - of Red Huckles'
They have been photographed and samples frozen for later mailing to the University of British Columbia. Local pickers 10 - for 10, have NEVER seen any whites! Blues, Blacks and Reds not whites.! They do not show up in any plant books.

They were found in our local forest, in coastal B.C. - being vague on location!!
