Got up early and to the trail head to beat the heat today. Smoke in the air from the "Sand" fire in Santa Clarita made the air quality pretty poor. Trail was in pretty good shape, slow but easier on the way up. Lots of scree sliding on the way down. Saw a couple of people on the way up and a few more as I was descending. Had Harwood all to myself.
Up the Ridge, down to the Notch...great training hike...with the lift not running that morning, didn't see anyone from the Falls Road until the summit...

Alone
Saw 100+ people descending the ski hut trail, but nobody on Register Ridge. I hope it stays that way. But posts like this probably won't help . . .

Good Route
One of my winter goals accomplished. Snow was like styrofoam, crampons and axe were needed. Unable to stand, and no Baldy due to 60+ mph winds. Large chunk of ice flew past my head at the saddle between Harwood and Baldy, so I descended the bowl.

What a difference 2 weeks makes. Not much snow this time. Climbed Harwood and Baldy with good friend Miguel Forjan. Fun day.

Harwood/Baldy via Register Ridge
Some snow but it was consolidated for the most part. Climbed with my good friend mdostby.
Took the rigister ridge up Mount harwood and further to Mount Baldy. Beautiful views all around. Steep ascent on the ridge. Still no snow on the route or summit.
Nice alternitive to the other, more popular routes up Baldy and Harwood.

Got a head start at 4am. Caught a great sunrise as we hit the ridge. Runs right into the backbone for a nice summit to Baldy. Partner tagged Mount Hardwood on the way up.
Weather was perfect!

With 40# pack, nice climb & great views.
Nothing hardcore unless you're without trekking poles for added traction or foolish enough to try and descend this route.

Harwood Trail first trip
A fun, no-nonsense steep route. No slippage problems this summer - loose rocks and dirt, but well-packed. Trekking poles were a big uphill asset, letting me to lean into the slope and keep a low center of gravity. Use trails were well-marked until I got near the top, but route finding wasn't a problem. 2:05 from Manker Flats to Mount Harwood's summit.
The lack of traffic almost gave the illusion of wilderness, 'til shouts would echo down from Devil's Backbone.

Can be quite treacheropus on the loose talus -- particularly when covered with verglass! Typical 2 step up, 1 step retreat kind of challenge untill the backbone. Some interesting exposure if you choose to climb it....

This ridge route is a tough but beautiful route. Encountered some knee deep snow. Followed the ridge to the saddle between Harwood and Baldy and then up the summit. Returned via the Bowl and Ski Hut Trail. On another occassion, took the ridge straight up to Harwood and then over to Baldy.

Register ridge is a fun climbNice climb up a ridge that is pretty narrow at times. I'll call it class 1+.
