Reindeer Moss

Reindeer Moss

from a sign by this: "This general are is covered by several species of lichen belonging to the genus Cladonia. The erect, plae green to grey lichen is Cladonia rangiferana, commonly know as "Reindeer Moss." It is native to Artic tundra regions and survives here in the cool moist forest of Northern New England and Canada. When caribou once ranged these parts, the lichen made an important winter food source."
