Retracing our trail on Hvannadalshnúkur

We'er descending the northwest face, looking towards the northeast. If it wasn't for the low cloud on the horizon, Snæbreið (2041m), the second highest mountain in Iceland, would be visible. Earlier in our trip, we thought about climbing it as well, and perhaps have a view over the vast expanse of the Vatnajökull ice cap, but by now we we don't have the time for it anymore. Our only opportunity had passed away yesterday evening, after setting up camp on the saddle with Hvannadalshnúkur. Visibility wasn't the problem, Snæbreið was clear enough then. But unlike Hvannadalshnúkur, its slopes were quite gentle, which did not make the ascent look interesting. Being a bit tired, we found our warm sleeping bags much more attractive than a one or two hour slog in the cold. Besides, it was quite late already, attempting Snæbreið would have cut into our sleeping time. 19 May 2017.
