Approach

The well marked trailhead is inside the Lost Dutchman State Park with parking right at the trailhead.

Route Description

The trail starts at 2,080 feet elevation and runs about 5 miles round trip to the Flatiron and rises about 2,800 feet. It starts on a gentle slope toward the base of the Superstitions and heads into the Siphon Draw, a gully on the west side of the mountain. About 1.5 miles into the hike you'll come to the "waterfall", a smooth rock slide area where the park rangers recommend most people turn back.

The trail (if you can call it that) above the waterfall gets steep and goes straight up the gully. There are no switchbacks to speak of, the further you go, the steeper it gets! Look for the white spray paint dots and arrows to find the easiest route up. If you find yourself in a scree bed, you've gone too far to the right.

There is some hand-and-foot scrambling near the top of Siphon Draw. You'll find one particular tree especially helpful. Once you top out at a saddle, the trail flattens and runs westward to the tip of the Flatiron. You can also go east and climb a few hundred feet to a peak above the Flatiron. From there, you can see the whole Superstition Range.

Essential Gear

There is no technical climbing, but some trail finding skills are required. Bring lots of water (3 liters) in the summer time.
