I reached the summit in about 1 hour and 15 minutes, but the weather was cold, with high winds and fog. I loved the openess upon reaching the ridge line and it was an enjoying climb, except for the cold wind. Hope to do it again in May when the sunshine and flowers are out.

Beautiful day. Clear, warm up top, chilly in the valleys. 6-12 inches of snow approaching the summit. Watched the sunset in the ocean from the point just east of the saddle. Moon bright enough, didn't need headlamp to get back to the car. Cohp #32, OR Cohp #1.

It started to become a tradition to climb Saddle Mt. the first Saturday of January in the 90's.

Rain, Wind, Sleet, or Sunshine we had it all and loved every trip.

Lots of flowers and a big group from the Beaverton Intel campus passed on my way down.

5 peaks visible but a little hazy. I'll be heading back up at sunrise again on the 23rd.

Lots of flowers but there seems to be lots of thistle and dandelion taking over.

Went with a group of friends and hit the clouds at around 2000 feet. No view, but an excellent hike.

Weather wasn't bad when we started but had to encounter a hailstorm and torrential rains on the way up. It was completely fogged up with no views once we got up there. We actually got hit by lightening when standing on the summit, very unnerving to have the current pass through us with sparks flying around but no real harm done. Would suggest some sort of a metal conductor to be dug on the summit to avoid serious accidents like these. Wow, what a scary but exhilarating experience! Definitely plan to return under better weather conditions. Btw, we heard the same 'oomph oopmh' many times that someone else noted too, so we know we didn't imagine it..does anyone know what makes this sound?

Took advantage of unusually clement conditions on this balmy January afternoon. Despite clear conditions we could barely see the ocean, yet we could make out Rainier, St Helens, Hood and Jefferson.

Foggy & rainy morning hike. Fun trail, but a little crowded and over-logged for my taste...

This is the 2nd time I have been up Saddle Mountain. The first time was almost a month ago and it was windy, freezing, and I couldn't see a thing when I got to the top. What a difference a month makes! This time it was incredibly warm and the view was great. It was still a little hazy towards the coast, but a huge improvement over last time.

Arrived at the trailhead at 9:30 AM. Nobody else here. The sun was just coming out. The three of us summited at 10:40 AM. The crowds were slow in coming but by noon it was downright busy. Ice patches here and there. (should be gone in a couple of this type of day) Sun came out and was pretty clear. Could see the mouth of the mighty Columbia River, Rainier, ST. Helens, & Adams. I posted a few pics.

Jogged up most of this. Shwilled some brew at the top and then ran back down. Geat view. If you encounter any "unfriendly" & unleashed animals, quickly show them the ledge. Make sure to say hi, and pet the nice ones though.

Beautiful trip in tons of snow. Slush up to about 2400', then solid snow and ice to the summit. Winds at the saddle were about 35 mph, with snow and sleet. With the weather and deep snow, this little mountain felt a whole lot bigger. If you are heading up in these conditions, it won't hurt to bring your crampons. And maybe a few wands- they were a big help to me.

Went up here with my family back in the late 50's or early 60's and many times since. Always a great little hike and good views if you are lucky enough to have a clear day in this rainy corner of the state.

One of the most interesting hikes in the Coast Range - such a range of terrain and views. We encountered waterfalls on the trail itself and a decent padding of snow on the mountain top - it gave the hike a really alpine flair.

I started at 7:30am and topped at 8:15, socked in fog for most of the way up. The wild flowers are still out. I saw an elk on the seven mile drive from highway 26 (scared out of it's gourd by my little truck), chipmunks, and birds up the wazzu (one of these days I'm gonna learn to identify them).

I also hiked the little point just south of of Saddle Mt. and it afforded better views due to the cloud cover above... neat rock too. Back at the car by 10:30.

I heard an unidentified "ooomb ooomb" sound in the wooded area. Weird. I heard it on Mt. Defiance too.

people hae already probably responded to this, but the ooomb sound was probably the mating call of the grouse :)

After climbing Neah-kah-nie Mountain in the morning, we ate some lunch and headed up 53 to Saddle.

Beautiful day, lots of people coming down, we got to the top and no one was there. that's always a good feeling.

March, 2004 - Did this hike a second time for an excuse to get out of my apartment. It hailed the whole way to the top. Above treeline the wind was blowing it sideways, which was pretty painful whenever it hit bare skin. At a couple points, I thought the wind was going to actually knock me over. I could hardly even see the lower summit from the top. About 1/3 of the way down the hail stopped and the sun almost came out a few times. Saw 6 other people on the trail.

May, 2004 - Did this a third time, on my way back from the coast. Left the parking lot at 6:55 pm and summited at 8:00. saw one party of 2 on the summit. on the way down i saw a deer and a nice sunset.

Nice little hike with Shelby. Interesting rock and great views if you can look past the clear cuts. Just nice to get out again after a long wet winter.
