Route Climbed: From Tram Date Climbed: June 30, 2002
I started out on the trail from the aeral tram at 9:15 a.m. I reached the summit at about 2:00 p.m. It was a beautiful hike, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I did experience a bit of altitude sickness due to lack of sleep the night before. It is a beautiful trail, with spectacular views.
Route Climbed: Round Valley Date Climbed: April 29, 2002
Got a late start, leaving the tram at about 2:50 PM with the expectation that there may be some headlamp time in the evening. Not being in the best shape and spending too much time talking to others on the trail, it took me until 6:00 to reach the summit. On the descent I did finally need the headlamp about 1/4 mile from the ranger station. It was a cold, windy, but beautiful and enjoyable day.
Nice 10,400 ft vert / 35 mile workout. The trail was snow-free until about a mile below the tram, where it started to get pretty icy. It remained icy until about a mile above the tram. The rest of the hike to the summit was on well-packed snow. I wore running shoes, shorts and a t-shirt the whole way, except I put on a light jacket near the top. I didn't bring any money with me so I wouldn't be tempted to take the tram down. (NOTE - 2/21/02: I just read the guilty's comment below that the tram ride down is FREE. I didn't realize this when I was up there, but it's good to know!) Times: 5:27 up, 4:44 down.
Many thanks to mdostby for his great San Jacinto page!
