Sand Mountain is a 1500 foot tall sand mountain located directly east of St. George Utah, although the view of it is often blocked by the Washington Dome to its immediate west. It is popular as an ATV riding area and has numerous ATV trails.
The best access point is by typing "Long Valley Recreation Area" in to your mapping system. This is accessed by going on Washington Dam Rd and parking at the intersection with Southern Parkway.
The best route up is to follow the West Rim Trail and stay on that or merge on to West Rim Blvd and continue on that until you reach a point where you can see the obvious high point of the mountain. Follow the dirt roads and/or signage to the "Top of the World" as it is called. This is the summit and high point of Sand Mountain.
None aside from contending with ATV's on busy weekends.
Anytime but summer is good.
There is nearby camping in BLM sites and the Sand Hollow state park to the north.
