| Keep your ears open, I think I saw that the state is going to improve this highpoint. It could use it. That said, there was one decent lookout with a deck off the lower parking lot. | ||

| Did this the same day after hiking Brasstown in GA. Sassafras was one of the worst HP's. Nothing to really see, annoying to get to, no great hikes. Oh well, can't win them all.... | ||

| Some highpointers like to knock this peak for not being developed enough, but I found it to be quite enjoyable. Parked and rode my mountain bike to the top during the late afternoon in my one and only 3 highpoint day. HP #19. | ||

| One of the more entertaining trails I have been on with all the wooden bridges, ravines, and open forest views. The top may not be as nice as other state hps but it was worth the hike in from rt 178. Ninety eight minutes up and eighty back; I was trying to hustle a bit so I could hit a gem mine in North Carolina before it closed. | ||

| It was late in the day so we drove to the top. We enjoyed the fact that directly behind the HP there is obviously much higher ground... but it's in North Carolina. | ||

| Fourth on a bid through the "Southern Six-Pack." I took the easy way out on this one, as the blisters on my feet got pretty painful from a soggy hike up Mt. Mitchell earlier the same day, although my original plan was to take the Foothills Trail. (Doing Ironman Louisville in a week, I needed to save my feet.) I am somewhat reluctant to sign the log due to the drive up, but it will have to suffice this time around. I saw no one on the drive up or back; the summit was all to myself. It was worth it to hike to the overlook, although low clouds prevented too much of a view. SHP #27 | ||

| One of the worst HP's i've been to. Very little signage. We were lucky some other people were there or we probably wouldnt have found the survey marker. | ||

| Perfect addition to an Atlanta work trip. Clear skies, warm weather, and the leaves just coming out on ridge. Nice day trip with my friend Ed. The summit area is nicely maintained and free of litter. Brush and trees recently cut back to improve views from two viewpoints. Fun times! | ||

| Super Bowl Sunday had me at this South Carolina highpoint for the second state of my trip, I did my homework so I was very confident that I could find the turnoff to the summit. I found the turnoff but did not go far enough up the road so instead I took a trail up that was about 5 miles roundtrip. I was not prepared with enough water and it was very warm that day, but I managed to survive!! The top of the Mountain was poorly marked and if it was not for a fellow hiker, I might have never found the highpoint. The entire area was very nice. | ||

| When you get to the parking lot it is an easy walk up past the gate in the road. After about 100 yards, you come to a fork. Take the left side and you will be at the HP in a minute. I have attached some pix. Good luck. | ||

| This was the second time that my hiking and HP buddy, Mike, and I have visited Sassafras (first time was in 1994?). With the increase of technology (digital cameras, etc.), we basically decided to redo and document the 18 HP's we had already completed along the east coast. The disposable camera/photos just didn't cut it. Still no summit marker, sign, or anything to designate the actual highpoint, what a shame! There used to be a firetower on top of Sassafras, but even that was gone when we had visited back then. Since we had our GPSr's with us, we were able to locate the general area of the HP. You would think with Sassafras being so accessible, SC would eventually fall into synch with their surrounding neighbors (GA, NC and TN), all of whom have nice landmarks for their similarly accessible HP's. In contrast to the lack of view from the summit area, there is a spur trail leading from the parking lot to a nice view of surrounding mountains. | ||
