Me and a friend tried to scale this peak via the east ridge approach on 5/18/2012. Parked at the reservoir and hit the trail at 8am. We were on the ridge by 11am but due to the amount of snow and low bushes/boulders, it made for a difficult scramble. The weather was ominous and we had to turn around. We were on snow for most of this hike once we started to get near treeline and the Buchanan Pass Trail was impossible to stay on, as it was under snow. However, you can see the trail clearly from the East Ridge, and this is definitely an easier option, if you can find it and stay on it.

Drove about a mile up the road from Beaver Reservoir before deciding the road was too rough for the Jeep Patriot. Parked the Jeep and then started walking towards the Beaver Creek/Coney Flats trailhead, and then up to Buchanan Pass and then to the summit of Sawtooth. Great weather, nice fall foliage, but a long approach.

8/5/06 - Tooth to Tooth Traverse From Coney Flats, ran ridge from Elk Tooth to Sawtooth and descended Sawtooth's east ridge. A very cool looking peak.

12/15/12 - 9 of us climbed and descended the East Ridge in a snowstorm. Great day out despite the wind and blowing snow.

Long hike but fun climbing once on the mountain - the approach is very long and requires 4WD.

Best climb of the summer! Loved the fact that there are no cairns or trails on this route.

My last summit on my traverse from Elk Tooth to Sawtooth. I've always wanted to climb this peak since first seeing it. What a finish to an awesome day. I really enjoyed the varied terrain of this traverse. RT 7:20 from Coney Flats

Anyone who stands on this summit, is standing on the easternmost point of the Continental Divide in the United States.

Drove to Coney Flats in the wee hours. The ridge was lots of fun, and we tackled all three towers directly to stay as close to the ridge as possible. We aimed left at the top of the talus slope and popped over the top within feet of the summit cairn. To get a view north, we dropped down to Buchanan and then went up the gentle, grassy slope to Red Deer Mountain's (UN 12391) huge domed summit.

Very nice scrambling near the top. Difficulties range from lower class 3 up to lower class 5 - choose you're own difficulty & make your way to the summit!

My friend Pete and I had been turned away from Sawtooth twice by weather (both attempts were on the East Face in the winter) before we finally summited with my wife Erin. The day we got it the weather again was not too nice. It was cold and raining and none of us had brought our winter gear so we were all soaked to the bone by the time we got back to the car. It was good to finally bag it though.

My second hike in the IPW. The Sawtooth is such a prominent peak to look at. I'll never forget the first day I saw this one from the Peak to Peak hwy. I knew I would soon climb it. The east ridge is the way to do this hike. Easy class 3 if that. The east face is a bit loose so be careful. The grassy basin on south of Sawtooth next to Coney Island is another one of those special places.
