A nice spring hike with snow above 8000 feet, and lots of snow in the upper basins

Not a promising weather day but kept going to give myself a chance at a window if one presented itself. At about 8000 ft, ran into a couple that had done it about 25 times before, he told me I had no excuse not to do it today. So, I popped into the gloom in the snowy rockfield, over the lip of that into the swampy basin and then saw the summit. When I got close I saw another ridge behind it and I wondered if I had been looking at a false summit. Thankfully it was not. Corniced ridge but I avoided that and didn't need to don crampons. On the summit ridge, I could see a worse dark grey storm coming over Ruby Peak. Quickly tagged the rimed up summit in a gust of about 50 mph. Never did see Twin Peaks come out of the gloom and given the winds and the storm coming, I passed on that one for today. Snowed that afternoon, then again that night. Might be done for the season now. Great one though. Need to go back and get Twin Peaks!

North ridge
Climbed on the 4th day of a 5 day winter Wallowa trip. We were camped on the summit of Hurricane Peak and followed the sketchy (exposed 5.easy and avalanche prone traverses) ridge system to the north ridge of Sawtooth, It was easy going from there to the summit.

Route Climbed: South Ridge
We followed the ridge over from Twin Peaks. The bottom of the ridge coming off Twin was a little tricky (class 3), than it was just an easy stroll over the very flat ridge to Sawtooth. We also saw bighorn sheep.

Route Climbed: South ridge (map route) Date Climbed: August 18, 2002Climbed with my brother, Pat, before we climbed Twin Peaks. 8 bighorns followed us up.
