"Do not attempt to directly ascend the cliffs in this area. Just continue along the base of the cliffs as they ascend up and around a corner to the left"
There is a good class 2 route up the rocky spur, well-marked with cairns in the upper sections. This is a good, low-talus route with spectacular views. This route is recommended in John Hart's "Hiking the Great Basin" (pp234-5) and is also the route taken by Pete Y.
I've taken this the rocky ridge route twice, as well as the east side gully, and greatly prefer the ridge. I know the ridge looks intimidating, but there is a split with a class 2 route just past the scrubby aspens; later, one goes right on the spur till a cairn indicates a hidden class 2 ramp to the left.
"As an adolescent I aspired to lasting fame, I craved factual certainty, and I thirsted for a meaningful vision of human life - so I became a scientist. This is like becoming an archbishop so you can meet girls."
