Sentinel Rock

Sentinel Rock

Sentinel Rock was a well-known feature along the Mount Lowe Railway to Alpine Tavern pre 1900. The trolley would have just passed over the ninth bridge on the way to Cape of Good Hope and then eventually Alpine Tavern. The Cape of Good Hope marks the point where the tracks crossed from Las Flores Canyon to Millard Canyon. San Gabriel Mountains, Ca. Mar.4, 2011.

Sentinal Rock

I am surprised that those ties are still there. When I began hiking in the Mt. Lowe area in 1954, there were still poles with insulators along the railroad bed. Here and there there were also twisted sections of steel rail. The ruins of both the cable house on Echo Mtn. and the west wing concrete shell of Alpine Tavern--as well as that last trestle--were also in decent shape. I'm glad that not all relics of this marvel are gone.
