From the old powerline road  Sucess!

Cut off a bit of the north approach by wheeling along the old powerline road to the ridge.

Wonderful, isolated desert peak  Sucess!

About 7 1/2 months prior (on 4/1/12) I attempted Shenandoah, not knowing that the driving directions contain a small but crucial error (see my note in the comments section if you want to take the northern approach). Despite eventually bailing that day, I discovered an excellent, lengthy alternative route that I finally completed now that the cool weather has returned.

By scrambling up a ridge far to the south of Shenandoah, you find yourself directly south of the peak, separated from it by a bowl-shaped valley. However, you can follow a long, horseshoe-shaped ridge that heads west/northwest before turning back to the east as you near the peak. The ridge traverses about 5 sub-peaks along the way, and passes by a number of abandoned mines. The majority of the ridgewalk follows a scat-covered herd path, and the views are amazing throughout the entire walk. One of the most serene, peaceful desert hikes I've found. Appx. 3 or 4 miles each way -- but the hike goes by quite quickly, as the ascent is rather gentle after the first mile or so. Highly recommended; can't believe more people don't explore this area.

Northeast ridge  Sucess!

After supposing this to be a lame peak, I'd put it off for the last few years. Granted the hike is quick and elementary, but the views are sublime and the summit is serene. I had to pry myself off the top.

About an hour car-to-car.
