Nice page, Gordon. This is one of the first Sierra mountains I got close to when I moved out here. I camped near a fire lookout north of Sierra Buttes one night and had fantastic views in the morning. Very prominent, rugged crags.
Ive done two ice climbs in the buttes. One was a few days ago by hiking up via the normal rout and before gettin to the summit desending towards young american lake. A few 100 feet form the trail down you have acsess to a nice snow and ice gully. It took us 5 hours with 10 pitches. We used a 30 m rope. This is what really slowed us down. Once out of the gully you can desende back down by rapelling or just heading towards the summit to find the trail again. It was a great climb.

traverseHas anybody heard of a successful traverse of the range? I've heard rumors that it has been done, but never repeated.

Re: traverseI haven't heard of it, the tips of the pinnacles could be difficult if you followed the ridge line exactly.
