Solar Telescopes

The VT Solar Telescope with the 60' and 150' Solar Towers behind. The Snow was the first telescope at the observatory, moved from the Yerkes Observatory in Chicago, IL, in 1904. Mounted horizontally, the two mirrors shown are just the tracking and directing mirrors. The primary mirror sits far back in the corrugated metal building. Operators work inside the telescope! This telescope revolutionized our understanding of the Sun.
