Starting up the track beside...

Starting up the track beside the Chairlift. The walk to the top of the lift takes about 45 minutes, or you can pay 3000 pesos (about $4.50 USD) to get whisked up in 5 minutes. The "official" start to the Villarrica climb is at the top of the lift. Note the clouds of sulphur gas being blown from the summit crater.

Silly Question

I was just wondering, is it odoriferous around there with that sulfur gas?

Re: Silly Question

On and near the crater rim, yes, it's awful.

Not really a "rotten egg" smell, but rather a "burn your nostrils" kind of odor. Depending on which way the wind is blowing, you can avoid it for periods of time while you're on top, but when you're in the middle of the cloud, it's really bad. Some climbers will carry gas masks up. I didn't think this was really necessary, but if you'll be spending a long time on the summit, or climb it frequently, it might be a good idea.

Re: Silly Question

Thanks for that very interesting bit of trivia. I think I'll pass on climbing that one, not that I had any intentions. :-)
