Steer's Head (Dicentra uniflora)
Steer's head grows on well-drained open slopes from the foothills to the subalpine, usually in grasslands or open forests. It blooms very early so its not often seen. Its range extends from Washington to California in the Cascade and Sierra Mountains and through much of the central and northern Rocky Mountains. Death in humans is rare but symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, severe trembling, and difficulty in breathing. Photo from Bruin Mountain, Idaho. July 2006
