Sv. Lovrenc

Sv. Lovrenc

Zabrezniške peči is the name of a ridge, where on the west Kamnik and Savinja Alps start. Just below the ridge there is this cute small church. From before the church we have a nice view on Gorenjska plane, with Bled lake and Triglav in the background. December, 2009. On the place, where today the church stands, archeological evidence shows traces of a settlement from the 8th to 6th century B.C. In the times after the collapse of Ancient Roman Empire, the place served as a refugium to Romanic people, who were hiding there before invading Germanic and Slavic people. The romanic church object was first mentioned in 1372. The same refugium purpose the place had in the times of Turkish raids (in 15th and 16th century). Supposedly every home from the village below had close to the church their cottage, in which they were keeping valuable objects and food. Later the church was broadened, renewed and its interior was painted with frescoes. But in 1821 it was destroyed. The church was renewed again in the years 1991-93.
