Telescope Peak from a Las...

Telescope Peak from a Las Vegas/Portland flight. Furnace Creek Ranch is the dark spot on the lower right and Badwater, at -268', on the far lower left. Here's a mountain you could truly do from the very bottom - now that would be a mountain climb!

Re: So when....

Thanks for the compliment and funny you should ask! I've already mapped out a route from the bottom of the Death Valley sink. It's less than 17 miles but 13,700 vertical feet due to a few ups and downs. I think it may be the most vertical in the US that could be done in a day (at least by us mortals!) and this has got to be a pretty decent prominence, too.

There's 4 3/4 miles on a dirt road, just over 6 miles on a trail and 1 1/3 miles across the lower desert to the sink. The part I'm not sure about is the upper 4 2/3 mile up a ridgeline - it's over 6k' vertical so it would be some pretty tough scrambling.

Sounds like fun! - want to do it this fall? Bob's ankle is still bothering him but it's getting better. He's tough - I bet he will be back to par in no time and might like the idea too.
