The Schafberg (1782m) between Lake Wolfgangsee and Lake Mondsee

The "Wolfgangseer Schafberg" is known as the "Austrian Rigi" in comparison with the peak in central Switzerland of nearly identical height from which you have an awesome view over lakes on all sides. The Schafberg has a very similar situation, being surrounded by three of the main lakes of the Salzkammergut (the name means, when translated literally, "salt chamber estates", a reference to the long history of this region as being one of Europe's most important salt-mining areas); the Wolfgangsee, the Mondsee and the Attersee, plus the gorgeous mountain scenery of the region with views to the Dachstein, the Berchtesgaden peaks and some of the larger peaks of the Hohe Tauern range. Another parallel to the Rigi would be the rack-rail train leading to it's summit, on top of which there is a hotel.
