The Shaggy Mane

The Shaggy Mane

The Shaggy Mane ( Coprinus comatus) mushrooms are edible when young ( and while their gills are still white). Initially they have a shape of white cylinders which turn into bell-shaped caps. The gills beneath the cap are white, then pink, and finally turn black and secrete a black liquid filled with spores. These mushrooms can be seen from spring through late autumn on the edges of mountain forests. The Low Beskid - Forest on the slope of Mount Cergowa - September 2007.
