The World's Champion Yellow Poplar

The World's Champion Yellow Poplar

After much searching, I finally located the Sag Branch Poplar. This is the world's champion poplar tree. For sheer volume, no poplar matches this one. Located in the Boogerman Grove in the Cataloochee area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Bob,

I just love the place-names in your part of the country: "Boogerman Grove in the Cataloochee area."

I love it.

Re: Boogerman Grove in the Cataloochee area

It's named after the fellow who owned a huge tract of land in what is now the park. His nickname was "Booger". Timber companies tried to buy his virgin forests up until he sold out to the Park Service, but he always refused, preferring the beauty of the old growth forest to the profits he could have made cutting them all down.
