Fun hike up the SE ridge. It looks like Mirror Lake is a popular and fun place for families to camp.

Lots of snow and postholing. Got off route and into the cliffbands ( real sketchy . I had to drop back down after an hour probing and swam in the snow up a steep slope to gain the ridge proper. Once on the ridge it was an easy route find.

Confused by reports of sun in the mountains while Puget Sound was smogged in, Friday was a good day to skip out. I accessed the peak by way of Mirror Lake #1302 and the PCT #2000 southbound. Head off trail at the south end of the lake, passing many campsites. This route may not be used often. Sometimes there is a path but mostly I used my imagination. Low on the ridge I crossed a small talus slope with a cairn right in the middle. At this point the path angles up and left, just below a cliff band. 100' of scrambling brings you to the ridge proper. I, however, went right and scrambled up about 250', finally gaining the ridge after a hairy move or two. From here up is up. First forest, then talus, and finally the peak. I could see the smoke plume from Leavenworth. All peaks were sunny, with fog in the sound and smoke drifting down the Columbia. No snow was seen anywhere from this vantage, except on a filthy Mt Rainier. I traversed to the west peak, where the summit register is. Between USGS, Beckey, and the Mountaineers, there is question as to which summit is higher. I did not find the 'normal' route down the NW ridge to the saddle. I heard it was class 3, but all I saw was cliffs. I dropped about 400' down the south ridge, but did not find a way through. I started the long traverse back the SE. On the way down I kept following the ridge, untill suddenly I was on a lookout point with nothing but sheer dropoffs! I backtracked a few yards and this is when i discovered the path towards the cairn. Only saw two people at the lake. R/T 5+ miles, 1975' cumulative gain, about four hours away from the car

This fall has offered a lot of sunny days in the Cascades and this was yet another one. Climbed Tinkham and Abiel Peaks starting from the Mirror Lake trailhead. Had both summits to myself. About 8 miles roundtrip.
