This is a fascinating read! And what a climb! Having been to Tres many times over the years, I found myself wanting to return. The allure of the Atacama is on-going, no matter my age. Thanks again for awaking the memories.
Hi Bob !
Thank you for your kind comment. I am glad I make you remind good times in these amazing places. I was just walking in your footsteps some years after...
Take care
Thank you for sharing this report. I remember seeing Tres Cruces on our way to and from Ojos del Salado. I was impressed by the sight and I wished we had the time to climb up there. So my curiosity is satisfied.
Did you have any trouble with the volcanic sand? I had some lung trouble for several weeks after visiting this area and it got in my eyes while hiking in windy conditions.
Hello Gimpilator
Thank you for your message.
I went several times in this region but luckily I never suffered the kind of lung or eyes problems you mentioned.
I saw your profile and... I must say that your log's list is really impressive !
I know the special feeling of this remote and austere landscape, having soloed Ojos del Salado in 1993, then bicycling by Tres Cruces. Thanks for bringing back the memories! (Merci beaucoup Guillaume pour evoquer les souvenirs!)
Do you know if Ricardo's vehicle was still at the base of Tres Cruces? These easy but high-altitude volcanos have killed many people that have not acclimatized properly.
Hi Chris,
Yes Ricardo's vehicle was at the base of Tres Cruces. I guess it has been removed since then. You are right : these easy moutains can be treacherous. High altitude, quick changing weather and remoteness can sometimes transform them into traps.
