Nice Trip Report

We were there about a month and half before your trip and the change in conditions is alarming. That hill melts fast.

Thanks for posting!

Great report, doumall and congrats on a new altitude record! I am hoping to do Orizaba next year, so your report is timely.

Glacier Disappearance

I climbed Orizaba, Popo, and Izta back in 1993. You've probably heard this before, but it's hard to believe how much the Jamapa Glacier has receded! No doubt global warming is taking place. The day before we climbed Orizaba, 4 climbers died in an avalanche (late November)and the glacier started around 17000', maybe lower. Still looks like a great climb, wish I were there.

Re: Glacier Disappearance

Thanks for the comment John! Senor Reyes said the mountain was quite different when the glacier extended over what is now called the Labyrinth. Easier climbing but more dangerous. Take care.

Well done! Excellent TR and congrats on the summit. Sounds like you had a great trip. I'm looking forward to getting back to Orizaba one of these days.

Nice

I enjoyed reading your TR. It looks like the snow conditions are even worse than when I climbed it last year (Feb). The Mexican volcanoes were my first taste of higher alitude too. Thanks for posting!

excellent and

to the point, trip report. very good basic info about pico without the usual ad nauseum details of getting there and back (mind you those can be good stories and are good reading if you are planning your first trip.)

Re: excellent and

Thanks ktnbs, our host in Tlachicuca remarked how silly he thought mentioning the traveling details into a mountian report was. Although I believe it can be very valuable for certain places, it didnt seem so for Mexico, so I followed his advice. Apparently its going over well.
