I just came across this post and realize it's a bit older but very worth clarifying. This mountain is historically known among the Northern New Mexico backcountry mountaineering crowd as Sin Nombre or No Name, not Bighorn. Mountains and areas are named so there is common reference when people are discussing a particular peak/region. When someone takes it upon their own ego to rename a mountain in an area they are not familiar with, then publish it in the same manner as the person who decided to name this peak Bighorn, all it does is create confusion when people are searching for legitimate information about an area. With respect to your apparent mountaineering experience Midlife, please do your research and learn about where you are and what you are discussing before creating unneeded confusion. This mountain tho officially unnamed is formally named Sin Nombre and you can't change that just because you want to. If you named every mountain in this region based on the presence of sheep then Wheeler, Frazer, Gold Hill, Kachina, Simpson, Old Mike, Lake Fork , and Vallecito would all be named Bighorn.
The “official” name for this peak is UN12819; I added this to the title to alleviate confusion. I guess some people will be confused no matter what the title says. I was told to assign a name to this peak by a senior SP member when I created the page. I’m not sure why; I didn’t care, I just named it. It had nothing to do with ego. An egotistical person is someone who takes the time to sign up to be a member of Summitpost in order to bloviate about the name of an insignificant peak in New Mexico.
Who “formally” named this peak Sin Nombre? The name itself implies that this peak has no name. Using your logic all peaks that have no name would be named Sin Nombre.
