This "Little Guy" (his name) was found at about 4-5 weeks of age. Probably the runt of the litter he sadly lost the competition for his mother's milk (either that or she was smashed in the road) becoming malnourished and dying slowly of starvation his back end became paralyzed. So he decided to forge out (or dragg out) on his own. Only to find the world to be a cruel place for baby parapalegic squirrels. He evaded all sorts of danger on his quest for food. Birds of prey circled the wilderness. Seeing their shadows and hearing their cries he pulled himself from bush to bush, hiding in the shadows-secret squirrel style. The cold nights nearly took him but he hunkered down in leaf piles as he tried to ward off hypothermia. Facing certain death he took a huge risk, dragging himsef into my yard. Laying on his side with impending seizures that would tap what little strenght left -I discovered him! It was the luckiest and happiest day of his life. I adopted him, nursing him back to health with milk from a syringe and nut paste. He took to me as the mother he never had. Today he has regained more than 25% movement (or use) in his back end and tail. Although he can't walk normal he can drag himself around with the best of 'em. He loves climbing trees and I've even taught him to rock climb on the stone wall in my yard. He is currently pulling 5.11a but I'd imagine by snowfall he will be dragging up the menacing 5.14 cornerstone overhang! So its been a great joy having him in my life and I'm hopeful he may regain full use of his back legs so that one day he may return to the wild! Update August 2008 unfortunately Little Guy passed away last winter from a massive seizure. He will be missed by all whose life he had touched and no more than by me.
