View back down the Sesvenna Glacier

My primary goal for the day is to climb Piz Sesvenna. The final part of the normal route follows the Piz Sesvenna east ridge, which is an easy rock climb (bits of UIAA grade II). The base of the ridge is the saddle with Foratrida. The two main ways to get there: from the south, by way of a steep trail ascending a scree slope, or from the north, crossing the Sesvenna Glacier. I'm on that glacier, looking back down to where I've come from. If you look closely, you can make out my footprints. As you can see, it's not steep at all, though I have to admit that I'm standing with my back to the steepest part, the last few meters below the saddle. But even that isn't really steep. Crampons are helpful, though if the top layer is softened up by the sun, it's possible to do without. However, you'll only know for sure by the time you're high on the glacier, so it's better to bring them. And at the moment, the snow is still hard, so I'm glad to have them. 24 Aug 2014.
