View East

Looking east at last light from a lower Kaweah Basin Lake toward Mt. Tyndall, Mt. Williamson, Trojan Peak and Mt. Barnard. Earlier in the day, I swam in this lake, and the water temperature was perfect for a leisurely backstroke and long under water exploration. Visibility was Caribbean clear, and it was nice not to have to worry about sharks. The Great Western Divide. Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP. Sierra Nevada, California. August 2008.

Kaweah Basin

Did you go over Pyra-Queen Col from Kaweah Basin? I've wondered how that pass was aesthetically as well as how the physical difficulty was. I'd love to do Kaweah Queen, but even that peak in the Kaweahs might be out of my comfort range. I can only imagine the view of The Black Kaweah from there though!

Re: Kaweah Basin

Came up from Junction Meadow, entering on the ridge at Picket Guard lake and then over into Kaweah Basin. We started at Horseshoe Meadow 5 days prior.

Wow!

Now that had to be a GREAT trip! How did you exit the area? The same way or via Black Rock-Glacier Pass to Mineral King? Of course the latter would have required a car shuttle to Mineral King. The latter trip plan was the one I entertained for going into the basin--over Kaweah Pass, then from the basin up Kaweah Queen and out via Pyra-Queen Col. Before we could refine the trip plan, though, I broke my leg and the trip has never been realized.

Re: Wow!

From here we crossed Colby pass, then Longley pass, and out over Kearsarge pass. My brother hitch hiked back to the car parked at Horseshoe, and made the pick up and we headed north. Great trip! 14 days in backcountry.
