Rick BDead trees?

Hasn't voted

Are those dead trees? They look like the needle bearing kind (can't find the english word..), so not just autumn colors. I noticed the same thing when I was in Bormio this summer, large areas of mountain forest entirely DEAD. That can't be good...

Btw, VERY nice photo!!

Cheers,

Rick

These are tamaracks. Tamaracks cast their needles in the fall as do bald cypresses and metasequoias.

Oh never heard of those, interesting, thanks. But still I don't think they'll do it in mid-summer, do you?

the general term is "larch tree" ("Lärche" in German). Colors come and then needles go in October/November. I don't know what happened in Bormio.

In America Larix species go by the name Tamarack- a great wood for starting a fire. I thought this was an autumn picture.
