Overview
Coronado is an island off the east coast of Baja, Mexico. It is easily viewed and accessed from Bahia de Los Angeles. It has a dramatic, Classic "Volcano" profile which commands your attention. It can only be accessed by boat, most typically sea kayak or panga. Although the altitude is not extreme, the views from Coronado's summit are well worth the steep climb. The views of Bahia de Los Angeles, the surrounding islands, the beautiful bare Baja coast, the huge island of LaGuardia and the Sea at large are breathtaking.

Getting There
Cross into Baja, Mexico at San Ysidro (south of San Diego). Proceed on Baja Highway 1 for 350 miles to Bahia Junction. Take the Bahia road fifty miles further until the road ends at the sleepy fishing village of Bahia de Los Angeles and the sea. Coronado is the striking and shapely volcano slightly north.
Launch your sea kayak (or rented panga) from the beach at Bahia. Paddle north up the coast approximately 6.5 miles and then cross the 1.75 mile channel to a lovely, sandy and wind-sheltered beach at the base of the volcano's south ridge, which is the middle of the island. Walk due east (away from the water), and a well-trod trail will become visible. This will take you to the base of the South Ridge Route, which is the Voir Normale!
Red Tape
When traveling in Baja, it is ALWAYS WISE to have your passport or visa, carry Mexican car insurance, avoid driving at night and have a $10 bill at the ready to pay off the Policia. Don't even think of carrying drugs or contraband, as there are consistently random military roadblocks!
Isla Coronado has an extremely fragile ecosystem. LEAVE NO TRACE, PACK OUT ALL THAT YOU PACK IN. DEFECATE ONLY IN THE SEA OR IN INTERTIDAL AREAS.
There is no fresh water source on the island.
When To Climb
Temperatures from November to April are brisk to pleasantly warm. The remaining months are uncomfortably hot and humid.
Camping
Camping on this beach is beautiful beyond words! Fish are plentiful in the bay and clam digging is possible during low tide. The contours of the bay present a lovely windsheltered campsite! The sea is Serenity, and the island is Solitude.
