Route Description

From the locked gate, start walking on a primitive road that skirts around the south side of the mine. The road than start heading southwest. Near the trailhead, you’ll pass by a small shelter just off the road. Continue on the road until you reach a junction marked by two metal posts. We turned left here and started walking south on a primitive road. It appears from the topo map that you are in Black Canyon at this point.

Continue on the road, where you will soon be on top of a small ridge overlooking Long Canyon just west of Point 5,087’. You will see a primitive road in the canyon below. You may be able to reach this road directly from the highway. To the southwest, you will also see a prominent 6,000’ saddle between Points 6173 and 6506. Leave the road and descend slightly into Long Canyon, then start angling southwest towards the saddle. Climb up the steep slope to the saddle, where you’ll get your first glimpse of Gray Mountain. At the saddle, turn left and climb up towards Point 6506. Skirt around the right side of the point and head for the 6,440’ saddle just southwest of Point 6506. Once you reach this saddle, start climbing southwest up a ridge towards Point 6730. Skirt around the left side of this point, and head for a 6,640’ saddle between it and Gray Mountain. Once at this saddle, climb east up a brushy ridge a short distance to the summit of Gray Mountain. The highest boulders will be on your left when you get to the top.
