Alta Peak from the east

Alta Peak from the east

7-Jan-2007: Alta Peak summit block, as viewed from a point on the ridge. Snowshoes will get you pretty close, but there is some class 3 scrambling. I was glad I'd brought crampons and ice axe as well (the slabs on the other side had a thin covering of ice & snow).

Nice shot...

And good info. I intended to get up to Alta the same day you did but didn't make the drive. Was there snow as low as Wolverton or did it start higher up?

Re: Nice shot...

Thanks !

The snow started at the trailhead, though by the time I got back there was a well beaten down path all the way to the junction with the Hump Trail.

Also, the park road (198) was one lane for a short stretch (a couple of miles) due to construction and there was mandatory chain control before the Giant Forest museum. So might want to allow extra time for the drive ...
