River Gacka

River Gacka meanders in many bends through Gacko Polje field, in Lika region behind Velebit, and is its trademark. In its crystal clear waters trout has largest growth in whole Europe. Gacko Polje is probably most beautiful part of Lika with soft meadows, parts of cultivated land, picturesque hamlets and fantastic river Gacka. Gacko Polje is typical karst field with closed hydrological system, which means rivers have source on one end and go below ground on the other end of field, when they hit slope of the mountain. Before disappearing underground waters of Gacka have been redirected to tunnel which take it through Velebit. Hi Zvonko! Not yet, still too early, especially in higher elevations where there is still 1m of snow and forecast predicts snowing whole this week. We had a week of unusually warm weather for mid March which removed 1m of snow from Velebit and raised temps on the coast to 20°C and even 25°C in the continent. Now it’s gradually going down and back to normal. Nothing is green yet, not even on sea level. Spring (greenery) arrives around mid April on the coast below Velebit while it reaches highest peaks around May 20th. This is May scenery from Lika.

My mind..

in my mind, this is not river(just comparism with others. Want to call Stream. But whatever you/me called..I love this place truely. Thanks for sharing this photo.
