Overview

Besseggen Ridge

Besseggen is Norway's most frequently executed mountain hike with over 30.000 visitors completing the hike annually. On the ridge you can enjoy the famous views over the emerald green Gjende lake (984 metres above sea level) and the deep blue Lake Bessvatnet (1,373 metres above sea level). The green colour of the lake shows that Gjendevannet is a lake fed by glacial water. Small particles from the glaciers float in the water and reflect the sunlight which produces an amazingly bright green colour. Lake Bessvatnet on the contrary is no glacial lake and therefore deep blue.
The trip takes 5-8 hours.

Getting There

Besseggen

Most hikers prefer to take the boat from Gjendesheim to Memurubu, and then walk back over the Besseggen. You can also start the hike at Gjendesheim and return by boat. Gjendesheim is located approximately 30 minutes by car or bus north of Beitostølen along the road rv. 51. This makes it possible to take the Besseggen hike whilst visiting Valdres.
Most of Bessegen hikers start trip from Beitostolen Resort.
