Six Mile Hill (NV)

Overview

Six Mile Hill is another lonely and rarely visited mountain in the "wilds" of Nevada which adds to the attraction to Nevada lovers like myself. Located about twenty five miles north of Battle Mountain (as the crow flies miles), Six Mile Hill is certainly more of a mountain than a hill. The reason it was of interest to myself was due to the fact that it is one of Nevada's peaks with more than two thousand feet of prominence.

This "Hill", has 2146 feet of prominence, which makes it the 144th most prominent peak in the state of Nevada according to prominence.


Route:
From the spot we were able to drive to (see map), it was about 5 miles round trip with 2000 feet of elevation gain. We found a better way down than the way we went up since that way included some bushwhacking. For more clarification, see Dennis Poulin's trip report on peakbagger.com It also has his GPS track.

Getting There

Find your way via I-80 (exit 229) to Battle Mountain and then follow these directions (thanks to Dennis Poulin) for writing down the mileage and providing a recap for how we approached the mountain:

Note: Remember that odometers vary so the mileage offered below might not be exact for your odometer but the mileages shown will put you in the ballpark. Zero your odometer after you exit I-80 for NV highway 305. Go north on Broad St, take a right on Front St, then a left on NV 805 which should be a total of .9 mile from I-80. At 2.9 mile cross the Humboldt River, at 6.9 cross the railroad tracks, the pavement narrows, and continue straight. At 3.4 mile the pavement ends, at 16.7 take the right fork, at 20.5 there is a cattle guard and continue straight. At 22.9 pass under some power transmission lines, at 23.9 take a left turn onto a lesser road that may be muddy, at 26.1 cross a rocky creek, at 26.3 cross a muddy creek, at 26.5 take the left fork, at 27.4 elevation 5500 ft is the end of the road. Park it.

We saw no private property or restrictive signage and it is probable that most of the land is BLM land. A BLM office is located in Battle Mountain and maps of the area are available for view.

Be aware of cattle as this is open range country as far as the roads are concerned. Also, if the weather is raining or threatening to rain, some of the roads you might travel might become impassable. We encountered several muddy areas on our visit that required careful driving

BLM land - Camping is permitted. Use common sense and pack out your garbage and follow the leave no trace ethics.

Mill Creek Campground - 20 miles south of Battle Mountain

Battle Mountain also offers motels and an RV campground.

Summit stuff & views

Since my visit in 2011, only 5 others have visited the mountain. Ken Jones in 2013, two hunters that looking for chukars and two new Nevada prominence peakbaggers from Spring Valley (Elko) Nevada. Still a lonely place with less than a dozen visitors in ten years.
