Sumava these days

Sumava, or Bavarian Forest in German, is a National park straddling the Czech-German border between Southern Bohemia and Northern Bavaria. The highest peak is Grosser Arber, or Velky Javor (1456 m). Before the fall of Berlin wall in 1989, it was right here, where the "iron curtain" actually divided the world into the East and West. The Czech side of round and heavily forested mountain ridges was thoroughly sealed off by many lines of barbed wire and absolutely inaccessible. It seems as if this area doesn't have much luck, though. Sadly, from the mid-nineties Sumava forest is plagued by the bark beetle calamity, which these days reaches truly apocalyptic dimensions. Pictures were taken in late summer of 2011, in the area around Luzny, or Lusen (1373 m), and Spicnik (1351 m).
