Re: Climb Max

.......tell me about it Brian!!

the amount of dough we leave there is just crazy! It IS the best store in the area though for climbing gear.

Re: Climb Max

Gotta love that 10% discount too! It's like getting your REI dividend instantly. So much gear.......so little time! And the fact that it's just a few blocks from PRG is dangerous for me too. :- )

Re: Climb Max

Agreed.

Climb Axe is great for pretty specialized climbing gear (ropes, rock/ice pro etc) --> good prices, great selection...however, I do prefer to buy stuff from REI whenever we can for (1) the nice dividend and (2) no hassle return/replacement policy.

....it's more like "so little cash and so much gear" on the wishlist!!

Re: Climb Max

I also agree. I get climbing gear from Climb Max (my friends know the owner so that helps too, I got to go into their factory building and see how they make axes once) and other supplies from REI and Mountain Shop. Mountain Shop employees are generally more knowledgable than REI ones IMO. US Outdoor Store has lots of selection too but I've had bad luck with their employees not knowing anything about what they are selling or wanting to help. OMC is good too but the selection seems a bit more limited. At least we have several good places to choose from in PDX. I just wish they were located closer to my home in West Linn! :- )

Re: Climb Max

Also had a bad experience with US Outdoor store. They claimed to have an item on sale which after I got to the store turned out not to be on sale and all I got was a bunch of surprised/annoyed looks from the 'ladies' that work there. Guess they have too much business.

Mountain shop and Climb Max both have some very knowledgable people not only with respect to gear they carry but they'll also answer questions about climbs & they both carry a nice selection of hiking/climbing books.

I used to think that it would be nice to have a store on the west side of town too before (closer to work and home), but I quickly realized that $$-saving-wise it would be a disaster (I'd spend all my luchtimes there).

Re: Climb Max

hmmmmm....wouldn't it be interesting to have a 'local climbing shop' review section in SP???

I could see this as being beneficial to both climbers and the shops ('keep up the good work' vs. 'improvement needed').

It seems to be a part of 'climbing culture' - every time we go away on some trip, we find ourselves checking out the local climb shops after/before climbs. Drooling over gear and shooting the breeze with the clerks. I'm guessing others do that too.

Re: Climb Max

Would be an interesting idea. US Outdoor Store could use some feedback. You're right, they must have so much business that customer service and equipment knowledge are secondary. Then again, if you know what you are looking for and don't need any help, chances are, they have 3 of them.

I could even see having a review of the employees. For instance at REI in Tualatin, there are two older men that work there. One is really good about hiking/snowshoe stuff, the other is good about map info. But you never want to ask the wrong one about the wrong topic or you'll get a blank look.

Ah well, I'm sure the server issues this would cause for Josh as people put in all their opinions would outweigh the benefit though.

In your adventures/experiences, have you run across any good stores like Climb Max up in Seattle? Next year, my friends and I plan on some more classic climbs in the N. Cascades (Prusik Peak-South Face, Dragontail Peak-Serpentine Arete, etc) and it would be nice to know of a place up in that area.

Re: Climb Max

sorry Brian but never stopped in Seattle (haven't even checked out that supposedly large REI store they have).

I know Climb Max is something of a chain ( they have different names though) - not sure if they have a branch in Seattle.

Re: Climb Max

Oh well, thanks anyway. I do like the REI up there, MUCH better than any other REI I've been to. 10x the size of what we have here in Portland. You should definitely check it out sometime.

I'll just have to keep spending money at ClimbMax! :-)
