| Found snow about one half mile up the trail. Put on snow shoes at the one mile mark. Spent the night at Bull of the Woods Pasture. It is a beautiful place and I plan to return sometime when the snow is gone. Great weather and snow camping experience with sunshine and mild temps. Played around and decended the next day. | |

| We parked at the William's Lake trailhead and walked up an avalanch gully to the south of Frazer Mountain and walked up the ridge to Wheeler. The clouds were very strange and at one point we considered bailing out to the west because of them. There was awesome glissading from Wheeler down to William's Lake. | ||

| A very long walk with interesting views. Not an obvious mountain......seemed more like a high point on a ridge. Scree skiing down to Williams Lake was fun! | ||

| My wife, my dad and I made this climb. We had great weather and had a good time. While we were on top a man and his seven year old son made it up the Williams lake trail. The dad was excited but the little boy looked worn out. I realy liked looking down on horseshoe lake. I would like to climb to that lake someday. | ||

| This is a beautiful hike, and an experience I will always treasure. The switchbacks out of La Cal Basin were taxing. Saw lots of cheeky marmots and a bighorn sheep that only begrudingly moved off of the trail for me. | |

| Great climb, but I might have wanted something not so long for my first peak ever. Saw lots of wildlife, and running down the scree on upper Williams Lake trail was great. Reccomend the pizza in the little pizza place in Taos Ski valley after . . .its great | ||

| Went up WIlliams Lake, down Bull of the Woods. Encountered snow at about 10,500 and above. Brutal conditions along summit ridge - 30-40 mph winds, temps in the 20's. But plenty of sunshine, and winds eventually did subside. Great views from the summit. Fun climb, even though we did got a little lost towards the bottom of Bull of the Woods Trail. | |

| It was a super windy summit, but well worth the 9 mile hike. It was unseasonably cold and abnormally windy. I met a dog at the top that had climbed Wheeler 4 times! We went down the Williams Lake trail, which I highly recommend. It shortens the return trip by about 4 miles, and the scree-skiing is too fun! | |

| We arrived at the trailhead at 0600 and headed up the trail. The first couple of hundred yards are confusing in the dark with the multiple trails. The Bull trail is very nice with great views. We made it to the summit in 4.5 hours. We only ran into 10-15 people so it wasn't much of a crowd. We took the Williams Lake route back to the trailhead due to the stormy weather that moved in. The first 1000 of altitude loss is a pain(ful). The scree field is rough. Having done Williams Lake trail down I'd rather have returned along the Bull trail. Great views and an excellent day out! This excellent mountain page had all the beta needed to climb Wheeler Peak. | |

| This was peak number two on my 24 hour, three state highpoint tour. The other two were Black Mesa, Ok., and Guadalupe Peak, Texas. Started from the trailhead at 4:00 am and reached the top around 7:15 after a very windy, cold hike up the west face. Lots of fun with headlamps! Some light ice and snow near the top. Great views all around. Didn't see anybody else until I was almost back to Williams Lake. If you want to miss the crowds, definately try an early morning hike. | ||

| Cold and windy for a September day with temperatures in the mid 30's and winds 30-40 mph. A light dusting of snow fell the night before above 12,000' feet. Saw two bighorn sheep right at timberline and a mess of people on the summit. Third time is a charm. | |

| The SummitPost website and the other print guides understate the amount of traffic on Wheeler, particularly on a holiday weekend, thus making the summit experience less than climactic. Is it really necessary to make cell phone calls from the peak? Having said that, the East Fork route seems to be the lesser used and lesser exposed route. Also, Horseshoe Lake (or "U-Horse Lake", as it is written on a certain sign) is the real gem of the trail. Old Mike would be a more interesting peak to hike on a subsequent trip. | |
