Main Trail  Sucess!

Beautiful clear day to start that quickly turned thunderstormy.
Probably the most humid I've ever seen it above 10k.

Pics and commentary are here.

Long drive from home  Sucess!

Left Pasco at 3pm, made it to Wells and got a $50 special at the super 8 around 11pm. Lost my debit card, and didn't leave wells until after 6am, which meant I arrived at the trailhead a little late, just after 9am. Decided to go for it anyway, even with thunderstorms rolling up the valley to the west. Summited around 11, thunderstorms overtook the mountain around 11:10. I managed to run down to treeline from the summit in probably 10-15 minutes. There was at least 7 people I counted still up above 12k feet when the torrential rains set in. For being kind of a mild hike, it was an adventure. Wheeler Peak has been near the top of my to do list for 5 years now, happy to have experienced it. Fully deserving of its National Park status. Anyway, 1500 miles of driving in a 48 hour window with two peaks bagged, a new record for me.

Climbed it for the second time exactly a year from the first time. Took my Scout troop to GBNP and we all made it to the top. Great trip!

Via Wheeler Peak Trail  Sucess!

Needing some elevation training for the upcoming Sierra season, we headed to eastern Nevada to climb one of the giants of the Great Basin, Mr. Wheeler. Drove all night Friday from LA, set up camp, then hiked to the top. No sleep, 600+ mi drive, coming from sea level. Felt surprisingly good. Temps were nice and the views absolutely fantastic. Had no energy to add nearby Jeff Davis Peak. Enjoyed the rest of the day by hiking up to the bristlecone pine grove. Toured Lehman Caves before driving back the next day. Great Basin NP is just fabulous!

Very scenic

Too much snow for a hike to the top but enjoyed the scenery around the Stella Lake area.

Trifecta  Sucess!

The second of three neighboring peaks, Bald, then Wheeler, and the more difficult Jeff Davis. Hail and thunderstorms chased us down earlier than we would have liked.

Ten weeks post op!  Sucess!

Ten weeks from my hip replacement to the summit - I took it slow and steady. Saw deer high on the ridge and lots of flowers above 12,000 feet. Slight rain on the way down, great views.

June 29, 2013 via Standard Route  Sucess!

Wandered up with my nephew on June 29, 2013. What a pretty cirque the west face of Wheeler and the north face of Jeff Davis peaks make! Hard to believe there is a glacier this face south!

Up the snow gully  Sucess!

Started on the main trail and detoured up a snow gully to the summit ridge with a group from the Idaho Hiking Club. Very windy!

Wheeler  Sucess!

They opened the road to the upper campground the day before we arrived in GBNP, so we were able to start at the lake loop and bristlecone pine grove trailhead. We worked our way to the ridge and on up to Wheeler. Made the awesome traverse over to Jeff Davis Peak and descended down a rock spine to the base of Jeff Davis and into the bristlecone forest. From there we caught the bristlecone and lake loop trail and on back to the trailhead. Made for an awesome loop hike.

Cold Late Season  Sucess!

November and it was cold. Camped at the upper grounds and did the short hike up on a strained leg which I strained right at the start of the ascent. But I had driven 250 miles to do it. Great views, blue and cold with streaks of sunlight through swirling clouds. Hit Pyramid next day.

Some wind, some snow  Sucess!

In near-winter conditions this climb was rewarding. Sunny skies belied the nasty wind (westerly at 20-25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph)and its attendant negative contributions. With 6" to 10" of snow hiding much of the summer trail, taking the "normal" route was nearly impossible. But with good viz it was great to be able to see the goal most of the time. With the Scenic Drive Road closed at Upper Lehman CG the climb this time of year begins at 7,580'. We hiked to the Wheeler Peak CG, camped and left for the summit the following morning

Beautiful day  Sucess!

Went up via the standard route on a sunny fall day. Not only my first time hiking over 13k feet, but also over 12k. My wife got very close to the top but had to head down due to feeling a bit sick, so I zipped up to the summit myself and then ran down to catch her at the saddle between Wheeler and Bald Mtn. I really wanted to do Bald Mtn afterward -- my legs felt just fine -- but my head was throbbing from the altitude. Next time!

Awesome Area!  Sucess!

Climbed in 2:20. Great Basin is an awesome park! We also did Jeff Davis and Bald Mountain and repeated Wheeler on the way back from Jeff Davis to Baldy. It was very smoky so the views weren't as spectacular as they could have been. I will certainly be back!

Amazing Views  Sucess!

Did the Traverse. Started on the Wheeler Peak trail at 8 and summitted Wheeler around 10ish. We went for the traverse, did the Needle and then did Jeff Davis. Weather started rolling in on us on Jeff Davis so we booked it down. Awesome view of Wheeler's incredible NE face!

Early Morning Hike  Sucess!

After successfully summiting Kings Peak (UT) the previous day, and with a bad storm looming in those mountains, I made the long, boring drive westward to Great Basin National Park. I was the first summiter of the day, signed the logbook in the summit mailbox, and headed down. The best part of the hike was experiencing little-to-no wind, which I have heard seldom happens there. But my peakbagging that day was not over, yet. This weekend would be full of all of the classic elements of a solo out-of-state Redwic peakbagging trip: Long drives, long hikes, little sleep.

Beautiful oasis in the desert!  Sucess!

Finally made it to this special place. Truly an oasis. Beautiful alpine zone miles above the desert. Standard hike was chill & fun. Did it with Faith. 5:20 c2c. Would like to check out caves if I make it back here. A winter ascent would be cool, too.
