Re: White Mtn flat tires

Of the 4 times I have done White Mountain Peak, 2 times there were flats. The 2 times I drove my CIVIC, no problems. Perhaps it forced me to be cautious. The times I went with others: in an Outback and in an F-150 we got flats. I think overestimating the ruggedness of one’s vehicle adds to the peril

Updated weather status link

The summit weather page hasn't been updated since Feb 2011, but Barcroft gives some data here: http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/weather/barc.html

Headstart from the Mt. Barcroft Station

It might be worth mentioning: Every year, usually about the 1st weekend in August, the Barcroft Station has an open house, during which the gate is opened and you can drive all the way to the station and start from there. (It's easiest to find parking there if you have a high-clearance vehicle.) Useful if you want to shave off a couple of miles of just road trudging... AFAIK, however, the summit 4WD road is never opened to the public for motorized travel.

Re: Headstart from the Mt. Barcroft Station

Thanks for the input! Do you know whom to contact, or who would provide the information for that?

Re: Headstart from the Mt. Barcroft Station

As I recall (we did the climb on Sunday, Aug 5th '07) we'd heard about it, and then they had the information on their web site:
http://www.wmrs.edu/facilities/bar/default.htm
I'm assuming it's still an ongoing thing. They had a medical station set up in the summit hut, where you could volunteer to have your blood oxygen, etc., checked! Unfortunately it was already a half-hour wait when we got to the top, and we couldn't stick around.

Dirt road

Easily passable with high clearance driven carefully, a couple of sections that could be sketchy for a sedan. No need for 4wd. 09/03/2016.
