Agreed with your assesment, on a good year it can be doable with a 2 wheel high clearance vehicle. But no guarantee. If you do have 4X4 continue further past Wind Caves into the Carrizo badlands. Just a 10-15 minute drive further up the canyon takes you to an otherworldly place of sedimentary rock with layers of fossil seashells and thick layers of selenite that make the hillsides look covered in broken glass.
