Sand is not the problem - it actually is the reason why they can grow ine in the first place. Lava cinder conserves humidity extremely well. So much so that on a desert-like island like Lanzarote you have to dig for 3 inches and at any time of the year you will pull up some moist dirt. Every ten years they have to exchange the cover, however.

Basically the wind would tear too much on those leaves and grapes and thus every plant (sometimes two or three) has its own fortification. But wine sells pretty well on Lanzarote so I guess it's worthwhile.

One more to take in: look at this one. There you see the actual amount of work it must have been to create the vinyards ;-)
