Winter camp in the shadows of Akkem Wall

Winter camp in the shadows of Akkem Wall

Dawn of day 12 of our March 1988 Altay ski backpack. We camped in the fold of the right-bank moraine of Akkem Glacier, and below the tongue of Druzhba Glacier, since we could not realistically cross the 3,350m-high ridge to Mensu Glacier from timberline to timbeline in one day. Upper Akkem Valley is getting crowded in summer, and the firewood is running low. But in winter, it was no problem crossing the frozen Akkem Lake and fetching some Siberian cedar wood on its high East bank, which is vitually inaccessible in summer. So we had the wood stove humming in the morning chill. but now it is time to set out, and it's gonna be a couple breezy hours until the Sun rays.
