Inadequate boots for sure as the fit caused blisters and indeed my toes did start feeling a cold pinch once I got above the tree line and the wind kicked in. So I'm guessing -40F with windchill as was the prediction that day.
But as for my fingers, I was toasty all day. The only finger pain was when I was forced to remove them to get into my pack. Had I worn mittens I would have had to take them off even more. I packed a pair of leather down mittens as an emergency backup. At least with the gloves I was able to operate my camera.
These snow boarding gloves are a great system. They have little hand warmer pockets on the back and I think that helped some - but I've never been cold in these gloves even without hand warmers.
