Zumsteinspitze (4563m) from Ludwigshöhe

See all those mountaineers on the glacier? They are undoubtedly on their way to Capanna Margherita, the highest mountain refuge in the European Alps. It's located on top of Signalkuppe / Punta Gnifetti (4554m), which lies on the right of the saddle in the upper right corner of this photo. Perhaps they'll climb the Zumsteinstpitze along the way, either today or early tomorrow. It's only a small trip from the saddle, Colle Gnifetti, which is already 4452 m high. We won't be going there though, we have different plans. We have a reservation at the Monte Rosa Hütte, and to get there we have to descend the long and crevassed Grenzglacier. 25 July 2012.
